At the end of the Second World War, young women were also forced to work by the German occupiers in the LAMPISTERIE (lamp room) of the coal mine of Waterschei.
Maria Willems was one of those women. It was their job to maintain the lamps the miners needed underground and to keep them ready for use again and again.

Excerpt: “Compulsory employment in Germany is based on a German regulation. This creates a framework: men between 18 and 50 and women between 21 and 35 can be obliged to work in Germany. There are exceptions, such as the miners or employees in companies that work for the German war industry. From March 1943, women are no longer sent to Germany: Sending young women to Germany unaccompanied is seen as morally threatening.
