The Story:
A shaft tripper, also known as a shaft seal or shaft stopper, is an essential safety mechanism in a mine. It is used to seal a vertical shaft to prevent the spread of toxic gases, fire or water infiltration. In the event of an emergency, such as a mining accident or gas leak, closing the shaft tripper can seal the entrance to the mine, which can prevent the spread of hazardous substances to other parts of the mine or to the surface. This contributes to the safety of the miners and the prevention of further damage. The shaft scrubber can be operated from the surface or from a control room within the mine, and it is vital that miners are properly trained in its use.
Shaft digging was also a tough and dangerous job in terms of human working conditions due to the freezing cold and the permanent danger of falling objects. In 1921, five shaft workers lost their lives in Eisden when their work platform tipped over.
