THE STORY:

The derrick of Waterschei (1906). The derrick was the base of the shaft trestle. The shaft cutters departed from these derricks to carry out the preparatory work for the shaft. The shaft holders were lowered with a barrel to create an entrance.

In waterschei, making the shaft and the preparatory works for coal took no less than 18 years. It was a complex process because of the application of the "freezing method". The ground around the shaft had to be frozen to prevent groundwater from running into the shaft.

The first coal was found in waterschei at -500 meters. Eventually, the shaft was deepened to 1200m over the years.
